A note on my name:
There is some confusion as to how I prefer to be called. Rule of thumb**: anything that's disyllabic. In other words, "Michael" is fine, but "Mike" isn't preferable. "Mikey" works, as does "Gruey" [sic], and both are commonly employed by many of my friends and acquaintances. Alas, despite my routine of introducing myself as "Michael", most people disregard my first name and head straight for the Gruen. I don't tell them to do this. (In fact, I NEVER tell them to do this.) They just do it. And I don't mind it at all — I've never met anyone whose last name gets such preferential treatment. Perhaps I'm just special like that.
*Random factoid: "misspelled" is one of the most commonly misspelled words.
**Ask a feminist the etymology of this phrase.
